Bifidobacterium asteroides

◔ Human-origin
Sequenced
Public genome assembly available

Bifidobacterium asteroides is a species found primarily in the gut microbiomes of honey bees and other Apis species, where it is considered a core and characteristic inhabitant rather than a human probiotic. Research on this species has focused on its ecology within bee colonies, its genomic characteristics, and basic biochemical properties such as oxygen tolerance and enzyme characterization — notably including an oxygen-inducible catalase that distinguishes it from many obligate anaerobe relatives. No evidence of human probiotic application or clinical trials was identified. B. asteroides is described here in an ecological and taxonomic context; it is an insect-associated organism without an established role in human supplementation.
