Lactobacillus helsingborgensis

Public genome assembly available

Lactobacillus helsingborgensis is a species originally isolated from the honey stomach of the honeybee Apis mellifera, described in a 2014 taxonomic study alongside six other novel bee-associated Lactobacillus species. Research on this organism is concentrated in apiary and insect health contexts: studies have explored its potential as a bee probiotic, examining hive microbiota, bee metabolism and proteome, and activity in vitro against honeybee pathogens such as Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius. Human probiotic research for L. helsingborgensis has not been published; this is a host-specific commensal of bees, and strain-specific evidence relevant to human health is absent. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
