Propionibacterium freudenreichii ET-3

◐ Food-origin
Sequenced
Public genome assembly available

Propionibacterium freudenreichii ET-3 is a dairy-associated bacterium (common in Swiss-type cheeses) that has been studied for its potential as a gut microbiota modulator. Human observational and RCT work has examined fecal bifidobacteria levels and stool frequency in healthy adults following regular consumption. Animal studies have explored its activity in colitis models, examining metabolites that interact with immune regulatory pathways. In vitro work has characterized a compound called DHNA (1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid) as a candidate bifidogenic factor. Evidence in humans is limited to microbiota and bowel regularity outcomes; no human efficacy data exist for clinical conditions. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
