Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DP189 (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum DP189) has been investigated in animal models for neuroprotective and cognitive properties via the gut-microbiota-brain axis — the proposed bidirectional communication pathway between the gut and central nervous system. Two 2021-2022 mouse studies using Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease models examined oxidative stress markers, gut microbiota composition, and neuroinflammatory signaling pathways. A 2024 animal study also examined the strain in the context of polyethylene microplastic-induced neurotoxicity and the microbiota-gut-brain axis. All findings are in animal models; no human clinical trials were identified, and the translational significance of these results for humans is not yet established. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
