Streptococcus salivarius M18
Streptococcus salivarius M18 is an oral probiotic strain with a growing body of randomized controlled trial evidence focused on dental and periodontal health. Multiple RCTs have examined M18 supplementation in relation to salivary Streptococcus mutans counts, plaque accumulation, and gingival bleeding, including a three-month double-blind trial. Additional trials in orthodontic patients have examined biofilm formation and halitosis, in connection with the strain's documented production of salivaricin (a bacteriocin active against certain oral pathogens) and its persistence in the oral cavity. Observational work has also examined plasma nitrite levels and blood pressure in connection with M18 supplementation. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
Where it's been studied Tags come from a conservative keyword scan of each paper's title, abstract, and summary. A tag is research coverage, not measured effect. How we classify this →
