Escherichia coli M-17
Escherichia coli M-17 is a non-pathogenic E. coli strain used historically as a probiotic in Eastern European medicine, particularly in products such as Colibacterin. The majority of its research record consists of in vitro studies examining antagonistic activity against other bacteria and characterization of its surface and lipopolysaccharide properties. One small randomized controlled trial investigated it in patients with irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by proximal small bowel inflammation; this represents an isolated study that has not been replicated at scale. E. coli M-17 is taxonomically distinct from pathogenic E. coli strains and has a long history of clinical use, though it is not widely studied in modern probiotic research outside of Eastern Europe. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
Where it's been studied Tags come from a conservative keyword scan of each paper's title, abstract, and summary. A tag is research coverage, not measured effect. How we classify this →
Share of this strain's 24 body-system-tagged papers that concern each system. Research coverage, not measured effect.
Symptoms in the research A tag means the paper's text names the symptom or condition — research coverage, not evidence of benefit. How we classify this →
