Escherichia coli Nissle 1917
Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is a non-pathogenic E. coli strain that has been studied for decades as a therapeutic gut colonizer and is notably distinct from disease-causing E. coli strains. Animal model research has examined intestinal barrier integrity and gut microRNA profiles in colitis models, and it has been explored as a vehicle for genetically engineered therapeutic functions, such as heavy-metal sequestration and amino acid metabolism modulation in metabolic disorders. Observational studies have examined the strain's ability to survive transit through the human gut, and reviews have examined its potential relevance to inflammatory bowel disease. Strain-specific evidence for human efficacy in inflammatory conditions is still emerging, and most available mechanistic data come from animal and in vitro experiments. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
