Akkermansia muciniphila MucT
Akkermansia muciniphila MucT is the type strain (the reference isolate) of a gut bacterium that lives in and feeds on the mucus layer lining the intestine. It has attracted substantial scientific interest as a commensal organism whose abundance has been examined in observational data in relation to metabolic health markers, though MucT itself is the laboratory reference rather than a commercial probiotic product. Animal studies have examined pasteurized (heat-killed) forms of MucT in models of obesity, glucose metabolism, and colitis; the pasteurized form has also advanced into early human trials in Europe. A 2025 in vitro study examined MucT's utilization of dietary polyphenols as iron acquisition tools. The evidence is largely preclinical; regulatory frameworks for A. muciniphila as a food supplement vary by jurisdiction, and most human data involve pasteurized preparations rather than live cells. These are research topics, not findings; the papers do not establish that this strain treats or prevents any condition.
Where it's been studied Tags come from a conservative keyword scan of each paper's title, abstract, and summary. A tag is research coverage, not measured effect. How we classify this →
