Lactococcus garvieae
Lactococcus garvieae is a gram-positive bacterium recognized primarily as a fish pathogen responsible for lactococcosis — a systemic disease causing significant mortality in aquaculture species such as yellowtail and rainbow trout — as well as an occasional opportunistic pathogen in humans, with case reports of septicemia documented. The indexed research covers genome sequencing of disease isolates, virulence factors, bacteriocin production, and vaccine development for fish aquaculture. While the species is phylogenetically related to lactic acid bacteria and produces bacteriocins with antimicrobial activity, it is not considered a probiotic organism; its documented pathogenic potential in fish and rare human infections distinguish it from commensal or beneficial Lactococcus species such as L. lactis.
