Lactiplantibacillus pentosus
Lactiplantibacillus pentosus (formerly Lactobacillus pentosus) is a lactic acid bacterium closely related to L. plantarum, commonly isolated from fermented vegetables — particularly table olive brines — as well as sourdough and other plant fermentations. The research record for this species is predominantly food-science oriented, covering its role in olive fermentation, bacteriocin (natural antimicrobial peptide) production, and biosurfactant properties with environmental remediation interest. A few animal model and in vitro reports have explored possible probiotic characteristics such as immunomodulation and allergy-related responses in mouse models. Human clinical evidence is absent, and L. pentosus remains primarily a food-grade and food-biotechnology organism rather than a clinically characterized probiotic.
