Lactobacillus crispatus is a lactic acid bacterium native to the human vaginal microbiota. Research has characterized the strain's genomic adaptation to host and body sites, and investigated its surface layer proteins and adhesion properties. Studies have examined the strain's role in vaginal dysbiosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and bacterial vaginosis in clinical and in vitro contexts. Comparative genomics have analyzed transport proteins and metabolomic properties across Lactobacillus species. The strain has been studied in animal models of vulvovaginal candidiasis.
